Precautions if COVID case is observed near you

Precautions if COVID case is

observed near you

Here are precautions one must take if a COVID-19 positive case is observed in your neighbourhood or in your building.
Since someone is positive today likely as they got symptoms, there is a high chance they would have got an infection in the last one week to 14 days. The person usually turns infections from day 3 or 4. So the infected person was unintentionally spreading it since last 5-10 days.
It means the infection can be spreading in other homes, maybe even yours in asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic manner. So you must protect yourself as well others if by chance you have an infection. Follow these things:

1. Check yourself for Symptoms of COVID-19

Since infection is roaming in the building far 5-10 days, there is a good chance more people might have been infected who may have infected others. So everyone in the building should test oneself for the symptoms regularly. You can get the updated list of symptoms here:
Don't rely very much on government symptoms checkers since they are not updated regularly in most of the countries. Check yourself. If you are sick or having symptoms, isolate yourself at home and try to contact doctors.
Also ask people who met an infected person in last week or so to prefer home isolation.

2. Disinfect commonly utilised things

Coronavirus can remain active on different surfaces for up to 3 days. So disinfect things that could have been used by an infected person. This include lift, railings, doorknobs, doorbells, places where they spent more than a few minutes in the last 2-3 days etc.

Coronavirus is society or colony
Things to do if COVID-19 case is observed in your society or colony.

3. Help the COVID-19 patients and people in home isolation

Make sure nobody from the family of a coronavirus infected person should come out until its urgent. This does not mean lock them, you could be jailed for doing so. Help them with every single supply they need. Whenever anyone from the apartment is going out for shopping, they should call them and ask if they need something.
Buy stuff for them in a separate disposable bag and leave it on their door. After going a bit far from the door, call them and tell them to pick up. You can take money through online payment.
Remember, nobody is safe from this coronavirus. So if tomorrow virus reaches your home, your neighbours can only be your saviours. So help them and get it back when you need. And if you don't help the family of an infected person, they may come out and this will increase the chance of spread.

4. Only one person should go out

Make sure it is only one, healthiest person of the family who goes out for shopping. Preferably it should not be an aged person or someone for sure someone having uncontrolled diabetes. They are at maximum risk category. Everyone should reduce going out to as less as possible. Diabetes is a very common disease which is not reported in a large population. Many a time people don't even know if they have it. So you can check symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes:

5. Whenever you go out, make sure to do these things

a. Properly wear your mask, better if you buy a good quality one. Here are our recommendations for face mask usage:

b. Do cover your hairs with headcover or at least a cap.
c. If possible, use a face shield or maybe a helmet.
d. Cover your hand with gloves if possible, the longer ones will be preferred. Prefer washable ones.
e. The shoes that you use while going out should be left outside the home and washed regularly with detergents.
f. Always keep a small bottle of sanitizer in your pocket and keep sanitizing your hands.

6. After coming back home do following

a. Take a bath as soon as you come back home. If you had not covered your head, wash it with shampoo as well.
b. The shoes that you use while going out should be left outside the home and washed regularly with detergents.
c. Clothes should go for washing. Helmet or face cover could be sprayed with 60-90% alcohol. Mask should be disinfected as prescribed in the above link.
d. When you get back home, don't keep your bags on the floor, table or any other surface directly. Keep them on a cloth or paper. Disinfect them, if possible in sunlight, or if you need urgently or there is no sunlight, non-edible items can be washed in detergents if possible. Please never wash edible items with detergent, bleach or any other chemical even if its called herbal. All have serious side effects. Check here how you can use sunlight to do so:
e. After removing everything from the bag, wash the bag and the cloth on which you kept it with detergent. If you used disposable bags or papers to keep the bag on, discard it immediately in the dustbin.

7. Prefer not to use the lift

It's a very enclosed area and coronavirus-containing aerosols or droplets could stay there for a few hours, so avoid it. Still, if you have to, never touch lift buttons. Use toothpicks or tissue papers to press the buttons. Keep such things inside the lift and outside lift on every floor. Discard the toothpick after every use.

If you are using stairs, don't touch surfaces such as railing.

8. Stock your grocery items for a month or so

We don't mean you stock up everything and no one else gets anything. But keep it filled for next month or so. This is because there is high chance infection may reach your home soon or who knows may have reached already and is spreading asymptomatically. So be ready for a condition if you can not go gout for 10-15 days or so.

9. Protect elders and people having comorbidity

Most importantly if someone has uncontrolled diabetes. Make sure they don't get in touch with anything that came from outside.

10. Maintain your immunity

Have a good diet. Eat everything including green veggies, fruits, dry fruits and if you are eating non-veg especially fish. Maintaining vitamin D is most crucial. You can get this partially from fish, but the main source is sunlight. So take it regularly from window, terrace or balcony.
Daily take a good night sleep of at least 7 hours. For kids its 9 hours. This is the biggest factor for your immunity. Do exercise daily. Preferably do some yoga and meditations also if you can. Try your best to stay happy and keep your environment cheerful as stress also brings down immunity. We know its difficult in a time of tension, but that's the way it is. Also, follow your government's order on how to maintain a good immune system. We will also update tips to maintain good health soon.

11. Make hand sanitizer available everywhere

Keeping the hands clean is our second biggest weapon after face cover in the fight against novel coronavirus. Maintain sanitizer on the entry of the building and if there are many flats/rooms on a floor, maintain on every floor. keep frequently washing or sanitizing your hands especially when you are touching anything that recently came from outside. Prefer any setup that one does not need to touch the bottle by hands. Three simple setups we can find are shown in videos below, you can try any of these, or search on youtube according to your resources and comfort. Else, if you want, you can try to buy one from the local market.

12. Can you use the balcony?

Some people asked us can we use balcony? Unless your balcony is very close to the balcony of the coronavirus infected family, you can easily use it. Droplets are dissipated very fast in the outside environment. So unless the coronavirus infected person is sitting in their balcony without the mask, there is a low chance of risk.

13. Maintain physical but not social distancing

Make sure you maintain good physical distancing but not the social distancing. Using calls or video calls, stay in touch with your loved ones and with infected family as well. This will remove everyone's stress, so increase immunity.

14. Don't feel relaxed when patients become negative

More then half of the infected people don't show any symptoms. So the chances are someone else also in the building could be infected and spreading it. So follow strong measures for at least 20 days after the COVID-19 positive patients have turned negative. Their family should also avoid going out for 15 days since negative results.

15. Enlighten your society

Share this and inform your society also about the precautions and all important information. Request everyone to follow these. Even if you follow everything and someone else does not, the infection will keep circulating and one day it will reach you. So we have to get rid of this virus as a community in the group.

  1. Thanks for these suggestions. I followed these when there was first case observed in my building. I also shared with my neighbours. Initially there was fast spread in our building. But later it was restricted to only 6 homes out of 28 flats. Now there is no new active COVID case in my building. I think these tips helped us a lot in controlling it.
